Crunch Time!

September has been our most intense month to date, as we finalize all gear, packing, and food for the journey and as well as completing key training, health, and documentation milestones required for race qualification. We also had our last event with the boat at Elliott Bay Marina - thank you to all who attended!

The Great Northern California Row

At the start of the month we completed a 290-mile offshore training row from Crescent City to Bodega Bay, California. This row was our chance to test procedures, custom food, equipment, cold weather gear, and experience larger ocean conditions. The infamous coastline did not disappoint. During the 4 day trek, we saw land only once, and no other vessels due to thick fog and staying 10-25 miles offshore. One night the fog was so thick, you couldn’t tell the difference between sky and sea, it felt like rowing through an undulating abyss. A highlight of the trip was witnessing a pack of over 100 sealions swarming around our boat. We took more video than normal. Watch for it on our Instagram in October!

Final Preparations Underway

To reach the start line, we are shipping our boat in a 40 foot ocean container from Savannah, GA to La Gomera in the Canary Islands where the race will start. The boat will arrive around 2 weeks ahead of us to be safe. As a result, everything we want to bring on the row including gear, food, and modifications to the boat had to be completed this month.

If there was ever a message to take away from this adventure, its that 90% of the race takes part before the race starts. Meal prepping 20000+ daily calories for over 60 days took an estimated 200 hours, not including the research, planning, and purchasing! We have also made some unique adjustments to our boat including moving the middle position forward 3 inches to optimize the power zone of our strokes.

An Update on Rowers

For the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, which starts on December 12th, we will be participating as a TRIO. Kramer, Isaac and Jonathan will be rowing for Team Pacific Boys to complete the 2021 race. Our shore team will be introduced in our November newsletter. We can’t wait!
